CUSTER COUNTY- Monday, May 27 is Memorial Day- a day to recognize all the men and women who died while serving in the United States military.
Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, was observed after the Civil War in 1868. Many people observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials and placing flowers and flags at the graves of veterans. Others hold gatherings with friends and family.
Callaway will be hosting a Memorial Day service at 10:30 a.m. at the Rose Hill Cemetery. The guest speaker will be Burdette Chappell, the District 6 Commander of the American Legion. If there is bad weather, the service will be moved to the Callaway Community Center.
Arcadia will be having a Memorial Day potato bar from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Arcadia Community Building. Adults are $10 and kids 12 and younger are $6. The proceeds will go towards the restoration and maintenance of the Gathering Place Historical building.
