Crossroads Mission Avenue and Food Bank for the Heartland will be hosting a mobile food pantry at the Custer County Fairgrounds Saturday Morning, February 21.
Daniel Buller, Executive Director of Crossroads Mission Avenue, told KCNI/KBBN that the group was ready to provide this weekend.
“We are set to really serve a crowd – we have enough to serve two hundred and seventy households,” said Buller. “If people have a need you know for groceries to help make ends meet this is a good time to come out.”
The Mobile Food Pantry is a partnership between Crossroads Mission Avenue and Food Bank for the Heartland.
“We just feel like food is one of those areas that we can partner with Food Bank for the Heartland and bring these mobile pantries. It’s just been a really a great partnership not only in Custer County – we serve sixteen other food pantries across south central Nebraska.”
Picking up food at the Custer County Fairgrounds is designed to be as simple as possible, according to Buller.

“You just get in line with your car. Someone will come around and get some basic information from you. Once you get up to the spot where we have the food, yeah, you just open your trunk, and we put it in,” he said. “We will have shelf stable foods like canned foods. Most of the time we have fresh produce and this time we actually will be able to provide two pounds of ground beef. It’s just a really good selection of food to fill your pantry. And we try to make it as quick and simple as possible.”
Pick-up for the Mobile Food Pantry starts at 9:00 AM on Saturday at the Custer County Fairgrounds. The Crossroads Mission Avenue welcomes local volunteers to assist in the handout as well – just come out to the Fairgrounds around 8:00 AM and someone will put you to work.
Anyone in need is welcome to come out and pick up a delivery of food from Crossroads Mission Avenue and Food Bank for the Heartland. The Mobile Food Pantry is generally open as long as food is available.
