Mason City Homecoming Celebrates 135 Years and Will Help with Street Repairs

MASON CITY—Traditional events as well as new activities will be on the schedule for this weekend’s Mason City Homecoming, July 23-July 25. In addition to celebrating 135 years of Mason City, this year’s event fundraisers and t-shirt sales will help improve the community.

Friday Night will be the first ever Mason City corn hole tournament in the beer garden on Main Street, along with a Teen Dance. Most of the weekend’s events will take place at the Community Building, Sims Park, or on Main Street. Money raised from some of the festivities will go toward the Mason City Village (MCV) street project.

Village Clerk Donna Hoblyn-Bittner told KCNI/KBBN she has worked for two years on getting FEMA assistance for the streets of Mason City following damage from the 2019 Bomb Cyclone. The village was originally denied assistance last fall but following much persistence and appeals, FEMA has accepted pleas for 16 projects.

“The Village of Mason City has to come up with 12.5% of these projects total costs to meet their FEMA required 12.5% match which equals $45,741.30 between the 16 projects,” Hoblyn-Bittner said.

The Village Board got creative and is appreciative of business sponsors and other contributors who have committed to donations to make this weekend possible and cover the band costs on Saturday night. Therefore, the majority of other funds raised from this weekend will go toward meeting the FEMA match.

“We love our community and those in and around it! Without their support, none of this would be possible,” Hoblyn-Bittner said in an email to KCNI/KBBN.
