Man arrested at Gothenburg campground last week dies in custody

Dawson County Sheriff Mark Montgomery says that Lane B. Dishman, age 55 of Elwood, died while in custody following his arrest at a Gothenburg campground last week.

Deputies were dispatched to the Blue Heron Campground on Friday morning, May 16 after a report of a male subject attempting to forcibly enter a female subject’s camper. With the Gothenburg Police Department, an investigation resulted in contact being made with Dishman in his camper.

During the contact, Dishman struck a Gothenburg Police Department officer in the head, which resulted in a need for medical attention for the officer. After a taser deployment, Dishman was taken into custody on assault, obstruction, and resisting arrest charges in addition to attempted burglary and disturbing the peace. He was transported to the Dawson County Jail in Lexington without further incident.

The following morning, corrections staff detected labored breathing from Dishman and contacted an ambulance. He was transported to the Lexington Regional Health Center before being taken to UNMC in Omaha where he was pronounced dead on Thursday morning, May 22.

The Dawson County Sheriff’s Office has requested assistance form South Central Area Law Enforcement Services (SCALES) to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death. An autopsy has been ordered by the Dawson County Attorney’s Office and the investigation remains ongoing.
