Loup County comes together to honor Kevin Brown with new trail

TAYLOR— In Loup County, a new trail is taking shape, dedicated to the memory of beloved teacher and community member, Kevin Brown. Known for his passion for the outdoors, Brown left a lasting legacy when he provided funding to help kickstart the project. The Kevin Brown Educators Memorial Trail will soon provide locals and visitors alike with a safe and accessible space for outdoor activities.

The trail will run from the visitor center in Taylor, stretching north along the east side of Highway 183, crossing the river. The planned out-and-back trail will initially cover 3 miles, offering a scenic route for walking, hiking, biking, rollerblading, and other outdoor activities. Organizers say this trail is not only a tribute to Brown but also an important community resource that will help promote both physical fitness and local tourism.

Susan McNeil, a committee member of the project, explained the significance of the trail.

“We are doing this in honor of Mr. Brown, who was such a dedicated and active member of our community. He was an avid walker, and we believe this is a perfect way to continue his legacy. The trail will provide a safe, designated place for outdoor activities, which our community really needs. And, of course, it will help highlight the “natural beauty of the Sandhills,” said McNeil.

The trail is expected to draw more visitors to the area, boosting tourism while showcasing the stunning local flora and fauna. The project is also about encouraging everyone to get outside and enjoy the fresh air. The trail once complete will be free and open to all.

To help fund the trail’s construction, the project has secured a significant grant from the
Department of Roads’ Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP), covering 80% of the costs. The remaining 20% is being raised through community donations, with the goal of raising $200,000. Donations can be made through the Calamus Area Community Fund, and contributions are tax-deductible. Simply note that the donation is for the Kevin Brown Trail when submitting your check.

Those who want to keep up with the progress of the trail or want to get involved can visit the Kevin Brown Educators Memorial Trail page on Facebook for more information.
