THEDFORD – April Smith, the newest stylist in Thedford, held a grand opening of her new shop, Homestead Hair & Spa on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2024, from 3:30 to 5:30.
The shop, on the west side of the courthouse square, was the location for what was the Country

Salon. That shop was owned by Michelle and Brent McIntosh. Michelle and her mother-in-law, Shirley McIntosh worked there for over 20 years. Michelle lost her battle with cancer last August, and Brent sold the building to April later last year. Shirley worked there until the end of December. April said Shirley is now her mentor, called upon when she has a question.
April received her A.A.S (Associate of Applied Science) from La’James International College in Fremont, Nebraska in 2005. She went on to also receive her barber certificate. April credits Michelle with encouraging her to pursue her cosmetology license. April had help renovating the shop from her husband Joseph, who is Thomas County Sheriff. Country Salon had two stations, the new owners modernized one and converted the other into a pedicure station, complete with a drainage system installed by Joseph.
April is also the Assistant Clerk Magistrate of Thomas, Hooker, Logan, and McPherson counties. She has been doing that for almost five years. Her schedule at the salon reflects her court duty hours. She is open Mondays from 8:30 to 5, Wednesdays – from 1 to 5:30. Thursdays – from eight to noon, and is also open every other Sunday – from one to 5:30. Hours are subject to change as she also follows the activities her sons are in. Smith can be contacted by calling 402- 317-1308. She was fully booked for prom hairdos (8) after she mentioned it on her Facebook page in a very short time. She also does facials and nails, and shortly will be offering tanning sessions.
Another service she has provided the community and area for several years is sweet treats under the moniker ‘Made Sweet by April’. She offers cupcakes, muffins, cakes, cookies, and so much more! She had many treats for sale during her grand opening and sold out. The hutch in the shop that holds her treats does not stay filled for long.
Besides Thedford, April has clients from as far away as Broken Bow and Valentine, as well as Dunning, Halsey, and Mullen.
