CALLAWAY–Around 5 p.m. on Monday, September 12 a fire was reported in a hay field near Drive 435 and County Road 773 between Callaway and Oconto.
Cliff Badgley with the Oconto Volunteer Fire Department told KCNI/KBBN a resident was baling hay grass when he noticed the baler was on fire, likely due to a bearing that went out.
Badgley said the resident was able to disconnect the tractor before it caught on fire but Badgley estimated approximately 10 acres were burned in addition to the loss of some bales.
He warns the public about the dry conditions and urges caution. “Be aware of how dry it is and be careful,” Badgley said.
Callaway, Oconto, and Eddyville fire crews were called to the scene.
