Custer County Judge Tami Schendt administered the oath of office to Broken Bow’s Clay Govier on Monday morning, December 15, making Govier the new Custer County Supervisor for the District 3 area.

Govier is taking the place of former Supervisor Barry Fox, who stepped down in November to free up more time for his business ventures. District 3 covers the western half of Broken Bow, delineated at about 10th Avenue.

After being sworn in, Govier noted that Fox was a strong influence on his decision to apply for the board position, stating the two had discussed the position, and that Fox though he would be a good fit. Govier stated he had been looking for a way to serve the area locally.

Govier expects a long list of items that will take up his attention as he becomes acquainted with the Supervisor’s activities.

“I think there’s a lot to learn about the county’s priorities,” said Govier. “Obviously, the hot topic right now is the recycling center. I think getting that kind of sorted out so it can stop being such a sticking point at a lot of our meetings is important.”

On the topic of county funding, Govier noted that as a farmer, things are definitely a lot tighter than they have been the last few years.

“Whether it’s some alternate funding sources or just tightening the belt a little bit, but we obviously have to fulfill the obligations of the county to the constituents. And I think that’s definitely number one. Financially, we’re obligated to serve them well too. So it’s definitely a balance and act,” Govier stated.

Govier’s first meeting with the Custer County Supervisors will be Tuesday, December 30th at 9:00 AM, at the Custer County Courthouse.
