Food 4 Youth Challenge wraps up this week, donations encouraged
A look at the donations from last year's Food 4 Youth Challenge

Time flies, and it certainly is during the Food 4 Youth Challenge, a food donation program run each year by Adams Land and Cattle. This year’s drive which began on September 9 is already preparing to wrap up later this week on the 25th.

Liz Babcock with Adams Land and Cattle visited with KCNI/KBBN on the Get Up & Go Breakfast Show recently, and said that now is the time for everyone to make a big push to try to exceed last year’s donation numbers.

“So what happens is, a lot of kids rely on the school for their breakfast or lunch and then when they leave school they may not have a meal until that following day. They have that food instability of not knowing, and then if you think about the weekends or in the summers. So what the schools do is they have these backpack programs is what they’re called. Very discreetly these teachers are putting food in kids’ backpacks, sending them home, and it’s easily prepare-able food that a kid can put together and make sure that their stomachs are full, that they’re able to sleep,” said Babcock.

She added that monetary donations in the form of gift cards as well as money for the account at the Custer County Foundation (CCF) for the Food 4 Youth account are a great help. Those dollars help the program purchase items of specific need to fill gaps throughout the year. The account at CCF can be donated to at any point, during or outside of the Food 4 Youth Challenge, and funds are evenly distributed to programs.

Last year’s donations totaled 6,750 items and over $6,000. As time runs low on this year’s challenge, everyone is encouraged to visit one of the locations below to make a donation.
