Fire North of Sumner Brought Under Control with Help of Mutual Aid Departments

Approximately 125 acres were burned in a fire north of Sumner Wednesday afternoon, March 4. Eddyville Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Fred Boon, who was the on-scene commander for the fire, told KCNI/KBBN that the fire was possibly started by a chainsaw or other equipment in the area.

Though one building was under threat during the afternoon blaze, no structures were lost due to the efforts of the fire crews at the scene.

Along with the Eddyville department, around 24 trucks and 50 firefighters responded from Ansley, Amherst, Broken Bow, Mason City, Miller, and Oconto, with Sumner Rescue on standby in case additional help was needed.

Boon was glad for all of the extra assistance in the warm, dry conditions.

“I’m just thankful for all our neighbors helping out,” said Boon. “I think we’re pretty fortunate for that.  We’d probably still be there if it wasn’t for all those guys coming to help us.”
