Elktoberfest 5k

Elktoberfest 5k
The Broken Bow Elks bundle up on Saturday morning.

BROKEN BOW – The Broken Bow Elks hosted their first annual 5k run and one-mile walk this past Saturday; 11 runners and 3 walkers and a dog or two made the loop from Melham Park, around the square, and back.

Organizer Kayla Haberstick humorously dubbed the first Elktoberfest 5k the “throwaway pancake year;” alluding to smoother, sweeter operations in the coming years, though everything went off without a hitch thanks to the unflagging warmth and optimism of the volunteer corps and donuts.

A batch of runners take off through Melham Park.

Early registrants received a t-shirt and interestingly enough, the race was not a fundraiser. The idea, according to one volunteer, was just to give the community something fun, and to raise awareness about the service the Elks organization provides year in and year out.

The Elks will hold a Veteran’s Supper in November, and their winter coat drive remains ongoing.

Runners warming up.
