MERNA–The public is sure to get a kick out of the upcoming Anselmo-Merna Public School (A-M) Donkey Basketball fundraiser on Tuesday, April 25 at 7 p.m. Saddle up for an unassuming evening of entertainment for the whole family.
Local “celebrity” donkey jockeys will attempt to ride real, live donkeys and shoot some hoops in a competition between the Anselmo-Merna Seniors vs. the Anselmo-Merna staff, as well as a matchup between the Anselmo and the Merna Fire Departments. A championship game will follow.
A-M Staff member Jennifer Schmidt and high school students told KCNI/KBBN Radio the event is a way to raise funds for the upcoming A-M Washington D.C./New York City Trip. Due to COVID-19, fundraising efforts slowed down but the freshman thru junior students are anxious to travel this June.
Tickets for the Dairyland Donkeyball event are $7 in advance or $10 at the door. Preschool age students are free. Free donkey rides will be available for kids age 12 and under!
Before you get your fill of basketball-playing burros, fill up your plate with spaghetti as part of the pre-game meal and additional fundraiser. Meals are $4 for ages 10 and under, and $6 for adults.
Ms. Schmidt and her students greatly appreciate the support of the spectators and local businesses who donated to the Dash for Cash Raffle. As for their upcoming trip, the A-M students look forward to seeing the 9/11 Memorial, spending time on Virginia Beach, and learning more about our nation’s capital.
In light of the 40,000 acres that burned during last week’s fires, there will also be a donation bucket as a way to raise funds for the local fire departments and say “thank you” for all of the hard work provided by firefighters and volunteers.
