BROKEN BOW, Neb.— The Custer County Board of Supervisors wrapped up budget work for the 2026-2027 fiscal year on Tuesday afternoon during their meeting that began at 1 PM following regular meeting business that included some quarterly and annual reports, a signature on a deed of reconveyance, and an update from Benefit Management about conversations being had with county employees leading up to renewal in a couple of months.
After hearing a presentation about the budget from the CPA hired to assist, no members of the public came forward during the public hearing portion of the meeting.
The board, of which all members were present, passed a final property tax request of $8,313,749.36, which is 2.06% higher than 2025. Valuation in the county was up 7.64%. Considering those numbers, the tax rate between 2025 and 2026 went from .210301 cents per $100 valuation to .199390 cents per $100 valuation. Supervisor Anne Gibbons was the lone vote of ‘no’ during both budget appropriation/adoption and property tax request votes.
The total operating budget of the county will decrease from last year’s operating budget by 0.0033%, going from $32,158,714.88 to $32,157,664.38 (a difference of -$1,050.50).
Petty cash funds were authorized for Custer County departments as well during the 2:00 PM portion of the meeting, stated to be the same as the previous fiscal year.
The board wrapped up by acting on behalf of the dissolved Corner Township board, passing a $20,500 budget that is a few hundred dollars higher than last year unanimously. They also approved a claim to pay the charge for the legal notice of the meeting in the Burwell newspaper.
