The Custer County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) has announced that they will be participating in the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) Highway Safety Office’s current campaign, titled Speeding Catches Up with You. The enforcement campaign runs from July 27 to August 9.
During the campaign, deputies will conduct increased traffic enforcement with an emphasis on identifying and stopping speeding violations to reduce speed related crashes and encourage motorists to slow down and obey speed limits.
In 2025, over 18,000 drivers were cited for speeding according to the NDOT Highway Safety Office. That included over 10,000 citations issued during enforcements funded by grants. Since 2022, data reported to the NDOT Highway Safety Office has shown a steady increase in speeding citations.
Data from the last two years showed that 117 fatal crashes were speed related, which accounts for nearly a quarter of traffic fatalities in that time.
CCSO is reminding motorists that speeding reduces reaction time, increases stopping distance, and raises the severity of crashes significantly. All drivers are encouraged to slow down, wear their seatbelts, and eliminate distractions. They added that arriving safely is always more important than arriving somewhere quickly.
