Custer County Recycling no longer able to accept pesticide containers

Custer County Recycling Manager, Kelly Flynn, shared some new changes to their program, particularly regarding not being able to accept pesticide containers. This change is due to the fact that pesticide jugs are more commonly used for chemicals applied to farms rather than household use. There are now only three places in Nebraska that accept these types of jugs, as they are concentrated and require special handling.

In a recent interview, Flynn mentioned that the center has been in operation since July 1995 and has seen great success in recycling efforts over the years. In fact, the center has sold over 17,250 tons (34.5 million pounds) of recyclable materials in the last 29 years.
Flynn encouraged anyone with questions about recycling or other materials to reach out to the center at the correct phone number, which is 308-212-2928.

Flynn also emphasized the importance of recycling correctly to ensure that materials can be processed efficiently. The center continues to accept paper, plastic bottles (specifically clear bottles with the #1 or #2 symbols), cardboard, aluminum cans and tin cans. It’s crucial that all materials are clean, empty and dry before being placed in the recycling bins. Flynn reminded residents to check the recycle number on the bottom of plastic containers, noting that the center only recycles plastics #1 or #2, as there is currently no market for plastics #3 – #7.

In addition to these updates, Flynn provided information on recycling drop-off sites in the area, including locations in 14 communities across 6 counties. These drop-off sites play a crucial role in sustaining the regional recycling program, as the center unloads around 30 trailers of recyclable materials every month.

For those living outside of the towns currently served by the center, Flynn encouraged communities to reach out about getting involved in recycling efforts. Interested communities can write a grant to request a recycling trailer for their community, allowing more areas to participate in sustainable recycling practices.

The Custer County Recycling Center continues to make strides in promoting recycling and protecting the environment. For more information on recycling practices and drop-off sites, visit the center’s website or contact the center directly at 308-212-2928.
