Custer County Historical Society to Host Handmade Soap Lecture

The Custer County Historical Society will host a special lecture on Sunday March 29th entitled the “Art and Science of Handmade Soap”.  The event will take place at the Custer County Museum beginning at 2 p.m.  Terri Gaedke of Ash Canyon Creations will be the presenter providing a fascinating in-depth look and demonstration of the soap making process.  During a recent edition of KCNI’s Public Affairs, Gaedke shared some of the items that would be discussed and shared during the presentation.

“Yes, so my great-grandma made soap. and I have been fortunate enough to have her recipe and her bar of soap from that recipe.  I have ran her recipe through my lye calculator to try to come up with the recipe amounts and it didn’t quite jive so I am going to make a beef tallow soap using a hundred percent beef tallow and then I will add in a few additives and some essential oils.  So I’m bringing like the past of what our ancestors or the pilgrims would have done into the modern day and making some good soap.”

A $10 admission fee to attend the lecture is requested.  Several other activities are planned throughout the spring and summer.  Tammy Hendrickson shared with KCNI/KBBN news that the historical society and museum is looking for volunteers to assist with projects and the hours of operation for the museum.

“And we are always looking for volunteers to help with projects, and in particular our summer help. Saturday you can split it off with a friend and come in. It’s hosting, it’s having a person to greet the people that come in and show them around a little bit. So once you’re there a little bit it’s a basic introduction and they may ask you some different things but, you know what, we’re here and it’s our everyday life they ask about.”
