Custer County Ag Society holds last meeting before county fair

The latest Ag Society board meeting tackled quite a few topics for some upcoming Custer County events.
The committee reports sparked an in-depth discussion about liability insurance for equine and beef. Follow-up questions and additional checks will be necessary before any full answers are given. They also reviewed the costs for judges’ meals during the event, which included $336 for Pizza Hut, $450 for Subway and donations of chips and water.

A new accounting services proposal was presented by Board Treasurer Bonnie Winters. Currently, the board pays $850 a month, but they received a new quote of $200 a month. While the cost is significantly lower, services provided will decrease, requiring board members and staff to take on additional duties. One-time fees of $1,400 and $1,500 will cover payroll and tax filing services.

Only one application was received for the Heritage Farm Family Award, which will be presented before the livestock auction.

The current freezer, which is out of order due to a circuit shortage, will be replaced by Staab’s Appliance. In return, Staab’s will receive a year of sponsorship advertising. The board approved this exchange unanimously.

Following up from the last meeting, it was decided that wood chips will be utilized solely in the cattle barn.

New lighting for the grandstands was also a topic of debate. Currently, lighting costs $65 an hour, and switching to LED lights would cost $1,000 upfront. However, the board decided to hold off on making this change now until they could gather more information on the hourly running rate for LEDs.

Stumps behind the grandstands will be removed at a cost of $100 per stump, with an additional $250 for tree trimming. The anticipated expense ranges between $750 and $800, which the board unanimously approved.

The meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m. with the next meeting scheduled for August 8th.
