THEDFORD – Story Courtesy of Terri Licking.
A retirement reception was given to Shirley McIntosh on January 4th after nearly 50 years of beautifying people’s heads at Homestead Hair & Spa, formerly Country Salon in Thedford.
New owner, April Smith, and Shirley’s daughter-in-law, Michelle hosted the event where over 75 customers came to wish her the best as she ends her styling career.
The Country Salon was the last of three shops she was a stylist at in Thedford, after first working a couple of years in Valentine. The first two were hers, the last was owned by her daughter-in-law, Michelle Nutter McIntosh when she and Brent moved home from Broken Bow in 2000. Shirley worked two days a week having customers coming from as far away as Valentine, Dunning, and Mullen, several of them being weekly appointments.
Due to Michelle‘s passing, Brent sold the shop to April Smith, who credits Michelle with encouraging her to pursue her dream of becoming a beautician. April will also sell her home-baked treats, “Made Sweet by April” and also offers pedicures by appointment.
April has set up a Facebook page, titled Homestead Hair & Spa which has her contact information, her schedule, and prices listed. She is already taking prom appointments.
Shirley will continue her hobbies of sewing and quilting when she is not helping her husband Lloyd on the ranch. Following Brent and Michelle’s daughter Lindsey,( their son Drew is in college), Chad and Michelle’s son and daughter, Luke and Hope in their school activities and other trips are also part of her plan to enjoy retirement.
