BROKEN BOW – The Broken Bow City Council convened at 6 p.m. on Tuesday evening for the final meeting in May; Councilman Myers was absent but excused.
Captain Dan Hanson’s tour of duty as Broken Bow’s Police Captain will come to an end on June 5; Hanson is retiring and was presented with a plaque by the city council for his 40 years of service.
City Administrator David Schmidt, on behalf of the council, city, and all gathered, expressed his appreciation for the unwavering dedication the outgoing captain showed in his near half-century of duty.
“Mere words fall short of accurately expressing our gratitude. To say, ‘Thank you,’ feels anemic and frail, but from the bottom of our hearts, we do thank you.”
Schmidt’s full speech, and Police Chief Steve Scott’s remarks, can be heard below.
Broken Bow’s DYO Spirit Softball received nearly $4,000 from the Public Alliance for Community Energy Choice Program; Spirit Softball’s Tom Griffith was on hand not only to take the check back to his team but to elaborate on how the money will be used.
“We want to redo the backstop. It’s been there as long as that field’s been there, as long as I’ve been here. We want to get the facilities upgraded, and I know that’s City of Broken Bow property, but it’s something we want to do; it’s a nice thing to give back to the community and it’ll go right back to the future of the program.”
The $3,935 will cover a sizeable chunk of the expected $14,000 backstop renovation, which is expected to get underway at the conclusion of this year’s softball season.

The council unanimously approved two appointments to the Park Board: Kelvin Kreitman and Josh Page will serve terms running to February 2026, and the Mayor, City Administrator, Clerk and Deputy Clerk, Treasurer, and Council President were approved as signers for city bank accounts at Nebraska State Bank.
The council also approved Troy Wuehler’s application to sell fireworks in Broken Bow. His operation, Troy’s Hot Rocket Fireworks, LLC, out of Cozad, will set up a 32-foot long semi-truck trailer in the empty lot between Napa and Orscheln’s, roughly at 454 East South E Street in Broken Bow during the upcoming fireworks season: June 25 through July 4.
Deputy Clerk Jacob Holcomb and City Administrator David Schmidt were approved as Broken Bow’s Zoning Administrator and Co-Administrator, respectively.
The meeting adjourned at 6:13 p.m.
