The Broken Bow City Council met in a brief regular session on Tuesday evening, April 14. The meeting was called to order by Mayor Rod Sonnichsen at 6:00 PM, and adjourned to enter executive session at 6:05 PM.
Along with bills and approval of the March 24 meeting minutes in the Consent Agenda, the main topic of discussion was the sale of a City-owned lot in the northeast part of Broken Bow.
City Administrator Dave Schmidt told the Council that the property at 843 North 6th Street, also known as “the Peterson Property” came into the City’s possession about a year and a half ago as part of an abatement program. Since then, the city has paid in the neighborhood of $12,000 on the property between about $5,000 of back taxes and costs to clean up and maintain the lot.
The house and an outbuilding that once sat on the lot are now gone, and Schmidt told the Council that he would like “to get it off of the mowing list, and back onto the tax rolls.”
While recommending a minimum bid of $10,000 to help recoup some of the City’s costs, Schmidt noted that an effort to sell the property a year ago received no bids, and suggested that the Council is open to accept or reject any offer put forward.

Further details regarding the two-month process and bid requirements will be advertised in the Custer County Chief, with bids on the sale to be considered possibly at the June 23 City Council Meeting.
With no additional formal business before the Council, Council President Russ Smith moved to adjourn to an Executive Strategy Meeting, with no additional decisions to be made for the evening.
The next meeting of the Broken Bow City Council will be Tuesday, April 28 at 6:00 PM in the Auditorium of the Broken Bow Municipal Building.
