ARNOLD, Neb – Congratulations to the winner of the Custer County Spelling Bee, Evan Sughayar, from Broken Bow.  His winning word was “compadre.” He has now qualified for the Regional Spelling Bee on March 14th, in Omaha.

Our second place holder, Issac Jarmin, is a 7th grader from Arnold who did a fantastic job. However the word that caused his stumble was the word “homonym.”

I was really nervous, and I had to restart spelling a few of the words, but I am happy I got 2nd place,” said Jarmin.

In third place, Leif Gabrielson from Sargent also did amazing. The word that he got incorrect was “suave.”

The day began with 66 students participating in round one.  The students spelled 20 words, the sheets were picked up to scored, and then they spelled 20 more.

At the beginning of round two, the field of student spellers was narrowed down to approximately 30 people.

When the scores were released for round three, the students began spelling aloud.

There were more participants than usual who did so well, so thirteen people made the cut rather than the usual ten, to make it fair,” said Nicole Badgley, Spelling Bee coordinator.

In the end, the Custer County Spelling Bee took seven rounds to find the champion, Evan Sughayar.

The competitors in this Bee participated in classroom bees and their school spelling bee to qualify.
