City Council reduces planning commission to 7 members at Tuesday’s meeting

BROKEN BOW – The Broken Bow City Council held its final meeting of the month on Tuesday evening at the Municipal Building Auditorium. City Administrator Schmidt was absent, as was Councilman Myers. Both were excused.

After approving the consent agenda, the council opened up a public hearing on Ordinance 1270, which would decrease the number of board members on the planning commission from 9 to 7.

The council closed the hearing and waived the ordinance’s three readings, and finally voted unanimously to approve it.

Mayor Rod Sonnichsen cited the primary reason for the change was to pace the commission with the number of ongoing planning projects; he said that when the board initially increased to 9, the city was undergoing rapid, numerous changes.

“The planning commission was originally set up for 9 members. There was a lot going on at that time. So input from the public was needed to set boundaries, and now we have zoning laws. Now, however, the planning commission doesn’t meet as often, and we’ve always lacked 2 members. To get a quorum, we need ideal conditions, and it has delayed a lot of progress for the city.”

Councilmen Baltz and Holland praised city crews for their upkeep and representation of Broken Bow during the previous busy weekends, as well.

The meeting adjourned at 6:10 p.m., with the next scheduled for Tuesday, July 11 at 6 p.m.
