City Council permits appointments, approves permits at first June meeting

BROKEN BOW – The Broken Bow City Council held its first meeting of the month Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. in the Municipal Building Auditorium; Council President Baltz was absent.

Steve Parr of JEO Consulting presented an update on the city’s one and six-year plans. Three projects had been on the city’s one-year list, and one had been completed: Memorial Drive’s renovation. The other two are the ongoing Eagle Crest subdivision and a water crossing on South 15th Avenue.

Parr highlighted a project that he recommends take precedence over others: again, it falls on Memorial Drive on C Street and 15th Avenue, in the form of concrete panel replacement.

“If you ever go out there and walk it a little bit, you’ll see a lot of bad panels, some are cracked and need to be sealed, but there are areas that will probably have to be reconstructed.”

Parr went on to say that the overall condition of the city’s roads and bridges is generally decent, and as far as the city’s 11 remaining projects go, many could be considered anticipatory, or preventative.

“It’s no different than a house. If you see some deterioration, the sooner you address it, the better off you are. The longer you put it off, it’ll just get worse and worse.”

The council opened a public hearing on the conditional use permit for Broken M Sales and Service. The permit would allow the entity to sell trucks on a stretch of land that is currently a vacant, fenced-in gravel lot. Upon the closed hearing, the board unanimously approved the permit.

Both Dennis Jones and Jim Duncan were reappointed to the Planning Commission; their terms will end in February of 2026. Jacob Holcomb was newly appointed to that commission; his term will also expire in February of 2026. According to Mayor Sonnichsen, the council isn’t the only group that would like to see him become a part of the commission.

“This is a recommendation from the Planning Commission to have him on staff. This is also going to accelerate the commission by having his knowledge as a part of it.”

Additional recommended personnel were approved unanimously, as well. Mayor Sonnichsen’s remarks regarding the 16 appointments can be heard below.

The meeting adjourned at 6:27 p.m., with the next scheduled for June 27.
