December and the holiday season are still a couple months away, but practices of the Custer County Christmas Cantata Choir have already begun. The choir is back in motion for 2024 for the second year in a row after a three to four year pause in activity ahead of 2023.
Choir Manager Lance Bristol recently spoke on KCNI’s Public Affairs program ahead of the group’s first practice on September 18. He said even if you missed the first practice, they are still searching for voices to join. That next opportunity is tomorrow night (September 25).
“What I’m here for today is to look for anybody out there who’s willing to come sing with us. We always need singers, we never have too many singers, there’s always room for one more singer. Whether you think you can sing or can’t sing, we’d love to have you. There’s no special audition, you don’t have to get up in front of the group and say who you are. Nothing like that. We have the music ready for people, we just need singers,” said Bristol.
Bristol said that he and director Morgan Harms (Broken Bow MS/HS vocal teacher) are seeking to repeat the great mix of voices that were in the choir last year. Above all, Bristol said, the choir is a chance to connect.
“Life is pretty busy these days so I like to look forward to opportunities where I get to see people who I really enjoy their personalities but our lives don’t allow for us to talk to each other very often. So singing together is one of the ways to kind of pull that together. For me, it’s just like a good family reunion,” Bristol said.
The cantata choir practices each Wednesday at 7:30 PM at the United Methodist Church in Broken Bow up until performances at the start of December. The first is on December 7 at 7 PM at the United Methodist Church. Performance number two is December 8 at 3 PM at the First Presbyterian Church in Broken Bow.
