CALLAWAY- Callaway’s annual Pioneer Picnic will take place this weekend, June 27-29.
The event begins with the opening of the swimming pool at noon on Friday. At 2 p.m., the 7 Valleys Museum will be open. Mutton busting at the Seven Valleys Rodeo Arena starts at 6:30 p.m., and at 7:30 p.m. is the Seven Valleys Rodeo. From 8:30 p.m. to 1 a.m., the Tim Zach Band will be at Henry’s Bar.
The Callaway Community Center will host the Callaway Good Life Center’s fundraiser breakfast at 7 a.m. to kick off Saturday events. At 8 a.m. is the color fun run put on by the South Loup Girls Basketball Team. Check-in is at 7:30 with white t-shirts available for purchase.
Henry’s Famous Bloody Mary bar will open at 9:30 a.m. With the theme 140 years of Community, the parade will begin at 10:45 a.m. Food stands will open after the parade around 11 a.m. with Mrs. Robinson’s Cook Shack and Street Tacos from FCCLA. The Cook Shack will offer pulled pork, brisket, nachos, brats, hot dogs, and more. FCCLA will have chicken and beef tacos, scotcharoos, and water.
The kids’ carnival starts at noon in Morgan Park. They will have Tropical Sno, Tail Twister’s cow pie BINGO, and a car show. At 12:30, the kids’ races will start. There will also be train rides and Spider Mountain Bouncy Houses. Pickleball, Cornhole, BINGO, and duck races will begin at 1 p.m.
Burgers and brats will be served at the community center at 5 p.m. At 8:30 p.m., the street dance will start at Henry’s with musical performances by Jackson Wayne, Downtown Nowhere, and Brandon and the Elevens.
Sunday begins with biscuits and gravy at the community center at 9 a.m. At 11 a.m., the Cook Shack is open and there will be church in Morgan Park.
The kids’ and adults’ tractor pull will begin at noon. Kids ages 4-12 are welcome to participate for free. 2 boys and 2 girls from each age group will qualify for the state fair tractor pull. Adults cost $10 to participate, with the winner receiving a cash payout. The Sons of the American Legion hope to see a lot of kids participate.
“Last year, we had a fantastic turnout. They said it was one of the biggest groups of kids they’d ever seen. I’m hoping that we can top that again. This year, I’d love to see as many kids down there as possible,” said one of the Legion members.
BINGO and dodgeball will start in Morgan Park at 1. At 2:30 p.m. is the toad and turtle boogie. At 4:30 p.m., is mutton busting, and the Seven Valleys Rodeo starts at 5:30 p.m.
Stacey Guthard, a Callaway Chamber of Commerce member, says the chamber hopes to see a lot of people at the event.
“We just want to invite everyone to join us this weekend. It’s going to be a great weekend for the whole family. This celebration brings our family together, and there’s something for everyone,” stated Guthard.
