COMSTOCK- Attendees from near and far are invited to Comstock for their annual 4th of July celebration, taking place from the early morning hours into the night.
Thursday’s activities begin with the Comstock Road Race in the morning at 7:30. Registrations were due by June 23, but spectators are encouraged to attend. A sand volleyball tournament will follow soon after along with the kickoff of a silent auction at The Den, which will close later in the afternoon at 3 PM.
Community member and owner of the Saddle Up Saloon in Comstock Dan Denson told KCNI/KBBN he’s particularly excited to see the entries that come in as a part of the men’s pie making contest. Entries are due at 10 AM. Denson said the idea came up in a similar way to the classic “the-fish-I-caught-is-bigger-than-the-fish-you-caught” competition.
“I’ve actually got quite a few guys around here that like to cook. So, we just kind of started talking to guys and there’s some guys that are really proud of their pies. So we decided ‘why not?’,” said Denson.
Morning activities wrap up with the parade, themed “Puttin’ on the Ritz” with lineup at 9:30 on the south end of the town and a starting time of 10 AM. Lunch options starting at noon include a BBQ meal to benefit the community club at the community hall as well as lunch, pie, and ice cream at The Den and lunch options at the Saddle Up Saloon.

Bragging rights are the name of the game in the afternoon in Comstock, as competitive fun and games kick off at 1 PM with the Big Iron Auction sponsored tug of war. Putt putt golf will also be taking place on main street.
At 1:30 kids races, egg toss, the penny shower, and turtle races are on the schedule. Denson encouraged everyone to be on the lookout for their racing turtle.
“If you spot one on the side of the road, you better grab it up because somebody’s going to want to have it for the day,” laughed Denson.
As 4:00 PM rolls around, the ball park becomes the center of attention for food truck meals as well as a cornhole tournament for a $20 registration. Those interested in playing can contact Jamie Kozeal at 308-215-8120. The evening activities and ball games continue into the evening at the ball park until dark, when the annual fireworks show takes place.
Denson said everyone is invited back to the Saddle Up Saloon for a street dance to round out the fun of the Comstock 4th of July after the fireworks until 1 AM, which includes a biscuits and gravy meal while it lasts. He closed by throwing out an invitation far and wide saying, “If you’re not one to participate, just come on in and enjoy and watch the kids, watch the people. Just have a good time and check it all out and see how beautiful this town really is.”
