Carnival returns to the Sargent Fair, Chokecherry Jamboree this weekend

SARGENT, Neb. – The annual Sargent Fair and Chokecherry Jamboree is quickly approaching this weekend. Organizers are excited to be bringing back a carnival to the festivities in addition to several great traditions.

This year’s festivities begin with a few “Friday favorites” including a drive-thru supper from the Sargent Post-Prom Committee, seen as a perfect way for those participating in the cruise night to get a meal on the go. The ugly truck contest is set for 6 PM, before the teen dance stats up at 8 at the tennis courts. The River City Carnival will run until 11 PM in its first of three days of action.

Saturday’s schedule, as is customary, is long. The pickleball tournament that was on the schedule for the 8 AM hour has been moved to after the parade. Other pre-parade events will happen though, including an alumni open house at the Palladium and the high school, lattes and smoothies from The Secret Garden, and the start of the vendor and craft show.

Organizers have put together a $100 cash prize for the parade float that takes the top spot in judging. The parade begins at 10:30 ahead of lunch in the park from the pool committee and the alumni banquet, both at noon.

The early afternoon hours will feature face painting, the day two kickoff of River City Carnival activities, and entertainment with the Three Timber Studios chainsaw artist and the legendary pit spitting contest.

When the clock hits 2:30, an afternoon packed with fun begins in the park which includes a cake walk, turtle race, muffin drop, a dunk tank, axe throwing, and horseshoe and cornhole tournaments.

A delicious pork supper from the American Legion will start the evening’s activities, paired with an ice cream and pie social from the United Methodist Church. Saturday will round out with a street dance featuring the sounds of SwitchBak outside of The Rescue bar.

Sunday’s events to round out the Sargent celebration include coffee from Ash Hollow, church in the park, a pancake fundraiser, kids water fights, the Dennis Seidel Memorial water fights, and one more day of the River City Carnival.
