CALLAWAY – Communities across Nebraska are working to become more livable for residents of all ages. One way that Callaway is looking to do that is through internet accessibility.
The AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) is partnering to help communities achieve these goals by providing grant funding for various projects. Callaway Economic Developer Amber Harrison is always on the lookout for grant opportunities for her community. When she became aware of the Community Challenge grant from AARP she decided to apply.
The organization recently announced six Nebraska recipients of the Community Challenge grants for 2023, and Callaway was chosen as one of them. The Seven Valleys Senior Center in Callaway was awarded $2,933 to be used for wireless service, a desktop computer, and a projector to support digital inclusion at the senior center.
According to a press release, the AARP Community Challenge funds innovative projects that inspire change in areas such as public places; housing; transportation; diversity, equity, and inclusion; digital connections; community resilience; and more.
As part of that effort, AARP is excited to announce the largest investment of grant dollars to date through the Community Challenge grant program. More than $3.6 million in quick-action grants are being distributed to 310 organizations across all 50 states, Washington D.C, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The AARP Community Challenge is open to all non-profit organizations and government entities. Other types of organizations are considered on a case-by-case basis. AARP Community Challenge grants may be used to support three project types: permanent physical improvements in the community; temporary demonstrations that lead to long-term change; or new, innovative programming pilots or services.
Harrison said she applied for one year of internet service and a desktop computer and is thrilled that funds for a new projector and screen were also included in the award. She said the addition of this equipment will allow the Callaway Senior Center to host more events such as webinars, and maybe even a movie night or football party.
