Callaway’s 2023 Pioneer Picnic promises more than just food

CALLAWAY – Callaway’s annual Pioneer Picnic is scheduled for this weekend at Morgan Park, from Friday, June 23 to Sunday, June 25. The three-day celebration’s name is quite an understatement, as events run anywhere from an art show to a pickleball tournament and everything in between.

On Friday at 10 a.m., the 7 Valleys Museum opens to welcome visitors for the weekend, with the pool opening at noon. At 7:30, the SVRA will host its first rodeo of the weekend, and Shotgun Annie’s will be hosting the annual street dance, featuring music from BJ Jamison and Brandon Hockett.

Day 2 of the picnic begins with an 8 a.m. Fun Run at Morgan Park, and at 9 a.m., registration for the auto show opens. There is no entry fee for the show, though there will be awards.

The Nigel Sprouse Library will provide sidewalk chalk so that attendees can decorate Main Street, and at 10 a.m. will host its art show. Henry’s will open its Bloody Mary bar until 4 p.m.

The parade lineup will be at 10 a.m., with an anticipated 10:45 start time. This year’s theme is “Building a Future.” Mrs. Robinson’s will open just after the parade’s conclusion to serve food.

At noon, a kids’ carnival and auto show will unfold near Morgan Park. Saturday afternoon offers a book sale to benefit the Callaway Elementary Student Council, a cornhole tournament at Henry’s, bounce houses, and an alumni tea from 2 to 4 at the American Legion Hall for graduates of Callaway High School.

Saturday night brings a 5 p.m. pickleball tournament at the Callaway Community Center, and a street dance at Henry’s starting at 8 p.m. Henry’s and Mrs. Robinson’s will be teaming up to provide late-night breakfast burritos for the dance, as well.

On Sunday, the SVRA will hold its second rodeo of the weekend at 10 a.m., and an 11 a.m. church service will be held in Morgan Park. The pool will open at 1, and toad and turtle races will take place at the park an hour later at 2. The weekend concludes with a 3rd SVRA rodeo, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on the rodeo grounds.
