Callaway Students Recognized for National Champion FCCLA Project

The Center for Student Leadership and Expanded Learning hosted The Commissioner’s Recognition in Lincoln recently, recognizing Career and Technical Education (CTE) students who achieved success in vocational and career education activities at the National Level.

Chenney Dishman, Angel Johnson and Kaygan Witthuhn of Callaway were recognized for excellence in their Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Repurpose and Redesign project, for which they garnered a National Championship at the past summer’s National Conference.

Dishman, Johnson, and Witthuhn competed against 68 other level-three teams from across the country in Orlando, FL, in July with their project designed to give discarded items new life.

The Callaway team’s project took dated children’s books from their local library and created a lampstand featuring books at the base and pages for the lampshade.

Callaway FCCLA Sponsor Charmayne Popp lauded the team’s effort at working through district and state competitions, reaching the national stage.

“These girls, two of them have been working in this project since they were freshmen,” said Popp. “In their freshman year, they received fourth place, and then their sophomore year, they received third place. They were bound to determine this last year that they were going to make it to nationals. They put in the extra effort. Their end goal was always, they were going to be national champions.”

FCCLA is a national Career and Technical Student Organization for students in Family and Consumer Sciences education in public and private schools. FCCLA offers intracurricular resources and opportunities for students to pursue careers that support families.
