Callaway Ranch Makes National top 20 list

CALLAWAY- A Custer County ranch has been named as a top breeder in the United States.

The American Hereford Association’s Top 20 Breeder’s list for 2022 was recently released, and Ridder Hereford Ranch of Callaway placed number four nationally.

This annual recognition honors superior cows in the breed and the breeders who manage them. To be honored as a Dam of Distinction, a cow must have a superior calving interval and weaning data in addition to other calving requirements. The initials “DOD” follow these cows for the rest of their life.

Ridder Hereford Ranch has 30 cows honored on this year’s list. As a state, Nebraska ranked third on the list with five breeders sitting in the top 20.

“We appreciate being honored for our productive cow herd” John Ridder stated, “especially given how many cows we calve out. Every year DOD progeny makes up a large percentage of our bull and heifer sale offering.”
