Callaway Kite Flight Awarded Grants to Help Rebuild Damaged Buildings

CALLAWAY – The Callaway Kite Flight received a $2,500 grant from the Custer County Foundation and a $3,000 grant from Custer County Tourism.

Foster Smith Memorial Field, home of the Callaway Kite Flight was hit hard by wind gusts estimated to be over 100 miles per hour that destroyed two buildings on July 29.

Instead of having two buildings, Ken Pitkin told KCNI/KBBN what future plans can look like for a new building at Foster Smith Field.

“We will probably just put one building back instead of having the two. We will probably design it in such a way that we can do one and serve out of it. Neither one had shade before, so we are looking really at a large storage container that will be rodent-proof, we didn’t have any shade so we are looking at building awnings onto it to provide shade for people for when they sell t-shirts or goods out there, or when they want to eat and they’re gonna be in the hot sun to watch the kites.”

The Annual Kite Flight will still take place on Labor Day of 2024.
