Broken Bow’s Inclusive Playground Project to Benefit from Gourds and Runzas

Broken Bow’s Runza Restaurant is preparing to serve a rare treat – Breakfast Runzas. On Friday morning, October 3, Runza’s doors and drive thru will open at 6am.

At the same time, KCNI/KBBN will celebrate the culmination of its Gourds for Good promotion – setting up in Runza’s parking lot to sell the gourds Station Manager Dave Birnie has been tending to (and collecting) all summer.

100% of the proceeds of both the Breakfast Runzas and the gourds sold will benefit the North Park Inclusive Playground Project.

“Our mission is to create a fully inclusive playground that serves children of all abilities, right here in Broken Bow! With your support and our fundraising efforts, together we can make this dream a reality,” stated Jessica Gibbons, Chair of the Inclusive Playground Project committee.

Ingredients of the Breakfast Runza include scrambled eggs, sausage, cream cheese, green peppers, onion and American cheese baked inside the signature Runza® dough. The recipe originated in Hastings, Nebraska and only a handful of Runza® Restaurant locations sold them through the 1980’s.

Joyce Richardson, Franchisee of the Broken Bow Runza® location, said, “Children are our future! At Runza®, we are excited to partner and donate 100% of the breakfast Runza® sandwich donations to help bring this project to fruition!”

Birnie told KCNI/KBBN News that the idea for the gourd patch sprang from a childhood experience when he helped his neighbors grow and sell gourds from their own garden. He is excited now to be contributing to the Inclusive Playground as well

Birnie said he felt the gourds held a special magic. “They are magic because they’re going to do magic things!” said Birnie. “Kids need to play together no matter what the situation. They need to be able to get on a swing when they have recess. There’s no reason that we can’t help with this project, along with Runza and all the committee members for this unified effort to have an inclusive playground in North Park School. That’s why they’re magic.”

Breakfast Runza Sandwiches and Gourds for Good are both expected to sell out quickly. The Runza drive-through and dining room both open at 6:00 AM on Friday Morning. Breakfast Runza Sandwiches are $5.00 each, with a limit of 4 per order. Gourds for Good are available for a free will donation – there is no limit to the good that can be done together.
