Broken Bow students serving as tour guides for Anne Frank exhibit Thursday night

A unique learning experience is available to those in the area, as a traveling exhibit named “Anne Frank: A History for Today” has made its way to Broken Bow. A community night will take place Thursday night (November 14) from 5 until 7 PM at the Broken Bow Public Schools activities building.

The international exhibition has travelled all over the world and is presented more than 300 times per year, telling the story of Anne Frank against the background of the Holocaust and the Second World War.

Principal Dan Helberg, who had experience with the exhibit during his time in Ansley, was excited to have it back in the area. “The opportunity came back around through Megan Helberg who works for the Anne Frank Center out of South Carolina now,” said Helberg. “They offered to let us host the exhibit at no charge and so her and two other colleagues from around the country came and did two days of training for our students. We have 20 students that participated and they are going to be giving student and community tours this week.”

The full tour includes around 30 panels that hold information and pictures. Brittany Nichols, Julian Reynolds, and Bailey Brown are among the student tour guides. Each of them said the training struck them as interesting.

“In the training we learned a lot about Anne Frank and what she had to go through and all the difficulties she had to go through. But we learned that it was very important, it was very sad, but it was so very important that she went through those things so then we could know about it today and reflect on it,” said Brown.

Helberg said visitors to the exhibit on Thursday night can each expect a completely unique tour from their student docent.

“Through their training, they were all encouraged to find a part of the story that spoke to them. So each one of them is going to have a little bit different tour because something resonates differently with each one of these students,” explained Helberg.
