BROKEN BOW – The Broken Bow School Board held their regular meeting Monday night in the school board room. Board member JB Atkins’s absence was excused.

The minutes of the previous board meeting were approved unanimously.

Superintendent Darren Tobey delivered district accolades, which included thanking those involved with “High Five Friday” and talking about how big of a hit that with with the North Park Students.

Tobey also spoke about how Broken Bow High School will be hosting NSAA boys and girls district wrestling, with girls being on February 9 and boys being on February 10, 2024.

Assistant middle/high school principal, Jeff Ellis also spoke during district accolades and talked about how winter sports practice started today.

“There are roughly a little over 30 boy wrestlers, 18 boys basketball players, and 25 girl basketball players for the three winter sports that Broken Bow offers. One Act has about 20 kids and the speech will gear up heavy-duty after Christmas” said Ellis.

Under the Visitors section of the agenda, Ryan Jones, father of two young girls who wrestle,  wanted to talk about sanctioning girls wrestling in Broken Bow.

Jones reached out to Ellis to see what needed to be done to get the ball rolling in order to bring girls wrestling to Broken Bow.

  1. Interest
  2. Other schools to compete with
  3. Training and Coaching

“My daughters coordinated with Ellis” Jones said, “and for one week, they put out a sign-up sheet asking if any girls would be interested in seeing Broken Bow getting a girls wrestling team, sign here. In one week we had 15 signatures.”

Currently, Broken Bow and Cozad are the only schools to not have girls wrestling in the Southwest Conference.

Girls and boys wrestlers can train at the same time, but they cannot wrestle one another.

The board will discuss the sanctioning of girls’ wrestling in future board meetings.

The Board Policy 2016 was approved.

The Anderson Grant was awarded to Broken Bow and provided Broken Bow FBLA with $4,900 to help with expenses with Nationals in Dallas Texas.

The next work session will be Monday, December 4 at noon and the next board meeting will be on December 18 at 6 p.m. in the board room.
