The Broken Bow Board of Education held its regular meeting Monday evening, June 17th, at the temporary summer meeting room in North Park School. School Board President Tom Osmond called the meeting to order at 6:00 pm.
Mary Shaw and Tim Chancellor were both excused for their absence. The Board approved the minutes of the previous Board meeting, and the members also approved the Treasurer’s and Claims Reports without debate.
School Board Treasurer J.B. Atkins proactively informed the members about the need to consider some budget amendments at the July meeting. This was due to the strategic decision to move dollars from the general fund to make the first payment earlier for the renovations in the middle and high schools. Mr. Atkins reassured the Board that the budget looks good overall, and with the construction funds in place, the amendments in July will reflect the proper budget balance.
Broken Bow Superintendent Darren Tobey was happy to report that the renovation and construction project has gone smoothly to this point. Work on the outside and inside of the school is underway, and Mr. Tobey said with a smile, “There have been no hiccups yet.” He suggested the board members take time for a project tour during the July meeting.
Superintendent Tobey was also happy to announce another teaching position has been filled. Tara Behrens signed a contract to teach 4th grade at North Park Elementary. With this hire, all openings for the next school year have been filled.
Meal prices for next school year will rise slightly. The Board accepted Lunch Time Solutions’ recommendation and approved the meal cost for 2024-2025. Breakfast for all students will be $1.85. Elementary noon meals will cost $3.35 and $3.45 for middle and high school students, representing a 10-cent increase per meal. Adult meal prices will remain at $2.75 for breakfast and $5.00 for noon meals.
Following reviews of 14 policies, the Board approved all of the policies, with minor amendments.
The meeting adjourned at 6:40 pm. A work session was scheduled for July 3rd at noon. The regular meeting will be held on July 15th at 6:00 pm in the gym at North Park School.
