Broken Bow man accused of stealing two trucks in June to appear in Custer County Court

CUSTER COUNTY, Neb. – Roy Poff, age 52 of Broken Bow, will make his first appearance in Custer County Court on Monday on a charge of theft by unlawful taking ($5,000+), a class IIA felony. The charges are from events that transpired in June when a pickup and trailer were stolen in Broken Bow and wrecked in Sherman County before another pickup was stolen from Loup City and recovered in Kearney.

According to court documents, the Custer County Sheriff’s office was advised of a stolen Ford pickup and stock trailer with three Honda ATVs inside on the morning of June 13. The investigating deputy later received a call from the Sherman County Sheriff indicating that all of the stolen items were involved in a wreck near Loup City and totaled. He also said that a stolen vehicle from Sherman County had been recovered in Kearney at the hospital by Kearney Police.

A report from the Kearney Police officer who contacted Poff said that he indicated people were chasing him and he was forced to wreck the vehicle he admitted to stealing. The report also states that Poff admitted to using methamphetamines about 36 to 48 hours prior and that its use enhanced visions or hallucinations of people chasing him.

Poff was placed in custody by Kearney Police. The total value of all items stolen was estimated to be between $22,500 and $31,000. Poff has posted bond and is scheduled to appear in court at 9 AM on Monday.
