The Broken Bow Public Library is capping off a record-breaking summer and stepping into August with a calendar full of programs for all ages—along with heartfelt gratitude for the community’s ongoing support.
The library’s 2025 Summer Reading Program wrapped up with remarkable numbers, engaging participants from toddlers to adults. “We had a weekly attendance for our summer reading program of about 2,000,” said Megan Svoboda of the Broken Bow Library. “That is really exciting. We had great turnout, great response, and we’re just very thankful for all of our donors and everyone that participated.”
Beyond reading, the library’s summer included visits from authors, interactive events for teens, and even late-night lock-ins. Young readers logged over 1,000 reading hours, and 42 received grand prizes. The adult and teen programs also drew strong participation, and the library credits the dedication of parents, childcare providers, and local sponsors for the program’s success.
August brings the return of monthly favorites like the scavenger hunt, chair yoga, and Bring Your Own Craft night. Readers can also look forward to book club where the group will discuss Things Don’t Break on Their Own.
One of the most anticipated events of the month is a visit from Nebraska State Poet Jewel Rogers, scheduled for August 25 at 5:30 PM. She will share her work and guests are encouraged to attend and enjoy light refreshments.
For those with a creative side, the library will host a hat burning workshop on August 28 from 5 until 7 PM. Not for putting old caps into flames, though. Participants will decorate high-quality felt or leather hats using pyrography techniques. The event is $40 and includes materials.
The library also took time during a recent Public Affairs interview to thank the community for its generosity during the recent Give 4 Custer County fundraiser, which brought in more than $6,000 toward the library’s roof replacement project.
“That campaign across the board was amazing. We live in a generous community. And the library was able to put over $6,000 towards our roof project. So that is much appreciated and needed,” said Svoboda.
