Broken Bow Fire Department burn permit issuance resumes

Following the news of the Governor’s statewide burn ban expiring, the Broken Pow Fire Department has announced that residents within the district can apply for burn permits again.

Burn permits are issued under the authority of Nebraska State Statute and need to follow rules set by the fire district. Fire Chief Dustin Watson sent the following list of reminders in a release.

  • Fires must be attended at all times with proper tools or water on site until completely extinguished
  • No burning prohibited materials such as treated lumber, plastics, rubber, garbage, or hazardous waste
  • Fires must be at least 50 feet from your buildings and 300 feet from any neighboring structures
  • Burning is not allowed if winds exceed 15 mph, any permit becomes void if wind conditions are too high
  • Only burn during the hours specified on your permit and extinguish fires completely before leaving
  • The fire department may inspect your burn site at any time
  • You are financially responsible for any damage suppression costs if your fire gets out of control
  • The fire department may extinguish any fire if conditions become unsafe, if complaints are received, or if rules are violated- even if a permit has been issued

In-person visits for assistance in submitting permit applications at the fire station are still welcome. Chief Watson wished everyone the best in keeping the community safe while burning responsibly and encouraged reaching out the the department with questions.
