The Broken Bow Board of Education held its monthly meeting on Monday, July 15, 2024, at the North Park School. School Board President Tom Osmond called the meeting to order at 6:00 pm. Tim Chancellor and Amy Staples were absent but excused.
The Board approved the verification of publication and notification and the minutes of the previous meeting. School Board Treasurer J.B. Atkins provided an overview of the school’s financials at the end of June. Atkins told the Board that expenses were slightly higher than last year, but revenue was also up, and the current balance was ahead of last year. The Board unanimously approved the Treasurer’s report.
Superintendent Darren Tobey provided an update on rejuvenating the school’s Professional Learning Community (PLC). A PLC is a small group of teachers expected to meet regularly to improve student learning and well-being in their classrooms. Tobey told the Board that, following instructions and accreditation, there was now a team of eight teachers in the group.
During District Accolades, Superintendent Tobey highlighted the success of the Broken Bow FBLA students who recently participated in the national convention in Orlando, Florida, and the Broken Bow Band students who performed with the National Guard Band on July 4.
Under Discussion and Action Items, the Board approved Preschool tuition fees for the 2025-2026 school year. The costs will increase by $15.00 to $160.00 monthly. The cost of Activity Passes for students, adults, and families for 2025-2026 will increase by $10.00. Student Activity Passes for a year will cost $60.00. Adult Passes will be $100.00. Family Passes will sell for $230.00. Admission at the door for 2025-2026 sporting events will increase by $1.00. Adults will pay $8.00, students will pay $6.00, and entry to JV/JH events will sell for $5.00.Board President Tom Osmond noted that the members were reluctant to increase Pass and Ticket costs, which have not been raised for several years. However, the school’s cost to host events continues to grow.
Board members also approved increasing the pay for Substitute Teachers by $10.00 to $145.00 per day and increasing Tech Fees from $40.00 to $50.00.
In conclusion, the Board approved seven annual policy reviews and 26 annual policy updates.
Superintendent Tobey noted new teachers will start on August 20, and all other teachers will begin on August 21. Students will begin classes on September 3.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:45 pm. The next regular meeting will be held on August 19, 2024, at 6:00 pm at the Broken Bow Public Library.
