Area speech teams competing for spot at state

Schools throughout the area are loading speech competitors into vans and buses heading all over the state to compete in district speech competition. On the line for each competitor and team is a trip to the state speech competition, which takes place March 20 to 22 at Kearney High School.

Broken Bow and Gothenburg competed among schools earliest on the district schedule, performing their speeches in Gothenburg this past Saturday. Gothenburg placed first in team scoring, with several competitors achieving an invite to state. Broken Bow placed fifth in the team standings.

Teams from the KCNI/KBBN listening area who competed yesterday include Anselmo-Merna, Ansley, Arcadia, Cozad, Litchfield. Loup County, and Sargent. Cozad competed in Gering. Arcadia, Loup County, and Sargent performed their speeches at Scribner-Snyder. Litchfield Public Schools was the host site of Anselmo-Merna, Ansley, and Litchfield.

Today’s competition sees Loup City travel to High Plains Community for D1-4 speech districts. Sumner-Eddyville-Miller will go to Grand Island Central Catholic to try to punch their tickets to state.

Students from Brady, Callaway, and Stapleton will be at South Platte High School competing Wednesday.

On Friday of this week, Arnold, McPherson County, Mullen, Sandhills, and Thedford are taking part in the D2-5 district meet at Wallace High School.
