Area speech students round out district competition, prepare for state

Several more area schools had students participating during the last two eligible dates for NSAA district speech competition. Many saw their efforts be rewarded with a top three medal, good enough to qualify for state competition this upcoming weekend in Kearney.

Arnold, Mullen, Stapleton all with students heading to state

Arnold took the team district title at the D2-5 district held at Perkins County  on Friday. State qualifiers included Adalei Tullis and Piper Strasburg (second in duet acting), Noah Anderson (second in entertainment speaking, district champion in extemporaneous speaking), Eli Rogers (third in extemporaneous speaking), and Angel Mills (third in oral interpretation of serious prose).

Maci Walz qualified for state representing Mullen in extemporaneous speaking, coming in second. Teammate Lola Wingebach will also head to state after coming in second in oral interpretation of humorous prose. Hunter Brown and Daniel Wright will team up for duet acting at the unified speech exhibition at Kearney.

Kempten Florea and Sheek Bruns were named district champions for Stapleton in duet acting. CJ Greeff will go to state in entertainment speaking after placing third, Coltan Clouse placed second in informative speaking ahead of teammate Luella Joedeman who placed third. The OID team of Coltan Clouse, Cotter Johnston, Kempten Florea, and Sheek Bruns were district runners-up, as were Avery Weems in oral interpretation of poetry and Madilynn McEntee in oral interpretation of serious prose. Briley Kramer also came in second, performing well in persuasive speaking. Ellexis Hagan was crowned district champion in program oral interpretation.

Ansley, Arcadia, Callaway, Litchfield competitors all achieve state trip

At the D2-4 event held at Litchfield, several area students earned the right to compete at state.

Ansley’s Garittee Smith and Kiera Bailey teamed up to take third in duet acting, while Smith will also go to state in extemporaneous speaking after placing third.

Arcadia’s Colin Rice came in third in entertainment speaking. Teammates joining him at state after also placing third at districts are LeKoltyn Hulinsky (informative speaking) and Kira Bergman (oral interpretation of serious prose). Carter Hurlbert will be at the unified speech exhibition performing a humorous speech representing Arcadia.

Callaway will send an OID team to state holding a district championship, made up of Brayden Keeney, Caleb Furrow, Chenney Dishman, and Kaygan Witthuhn. Braxton Anderson came in third in oral interpretation of humorous prose. Chenney Dishman also qualified for state individually in program oral interpretation.

Litchfield will have several students at state including James Fletcher and Malynn Boyles who were district champions in duet acting. Caydence Feldman was also a district champion in entertainment speaking, while also qualifying in extemporaneous speaking after placing second. Feldman, along with James Fletcher and Malynn Boyles, will head to state in OID as well after coming in third. Boyles qualified individually in oral interpretation of poetry as well (third place).

In B-6 district competition in Gering on Saturday, Cozad’s Camryn Yilk qualified for state in oral interpretation of poetry and oral interpretation of serious prose.

State speech is Friday and Saturday (March 27-28) at Kearney High School.
