Arcadia junior and soon-to-be senior Trysten Hornickel’s photograph was recently selected to receive a Gold Medal in the National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. The distinction comes after her work, titled “Angry Bird” was selected as a Nebraska regional award winner this past spring.
Hornickel’s work was selected from more than 340,000 art and writing pieces submitted by over 100,000 students nationwide. Only 2,500 pieces are named as national gold medal winners. Her photo will be available for viewing on the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards website and on display digitally this fall in New York for the 2024 National Exhibition.
Trysten is the daughter of Sue and Steve Hornickel of Ord.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards were founded in 1923 and presented by the nonprofit Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. The awards recognize student achievement in the visual and literary arts in 28 categories, including painting, novel writing, mixed media, poetry, digital art, journalism, and more. Works are judged on originality, technical skill, and emergence of personal vision or voice. Distinguished alumni of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards include Ken Burns, Sylvia Plath, Andy Warhol, Charles White, Amanda Gorman, and many more.
