Ansley man sentenced to jail in 2022 sexual assault case

CUSTER COUNTY, NE – Glen Jenkins, age 57 of Ansley, appeared for sentencing on a 1st degree sexual assault charge after previously being found guilty of the class II felony. A class II felony holds a minimum charge of one year imprisonment and a maximum of 50 years imprisonment. The charge is the result of events that took place in early August of 2022 in Ansley.

Charges of burglary, abuse of a vulnerable adult, DUI (2nd offense), and habitual criminal were previously dismissed in an agreement with the state that saw Jenkins enter a plea of no contest.

In arguments, Deputy County Attorney Kayla Haberstick cited Jenkins’ criminal history and the victim being 89 years old as reasons that a jail sentence was appropriate.

Jenkins’ attorney Matthew Furrow stated that Jenkins agrees that the treatment and assistance that incarceration could provide would help him. He also stated that Jenkins wants to be rehabilitated so he can work toward being a productive member of society.

Jenkins was offered the opportunity to make a statement, during which he apologized for what he did and said he will take every opportunity available to rehabilitate himself.

Judge Karin Noakes confirmed that she didn’t believe Jenkins was a suitable candidate for probation, and sentenced him to 25 to 40 years in prison with credit given for 620 days served. Jenkins will also be required to register with the Nebraska Sex Offender registry for the remainder of his life.

In other district court proceedings, Branden Miller, age 30 of Omaha appeared to admit or deny allegation that he violated standards set in post release supervision period of 18 months after also serving one year imprisonment for cruelty to an animal (IIIA felony). Miller denied the allegations and pretrial was set for May 16, 2024.

Steven Olson, age 71 of Broken Bow, appeared after a motion was filed by the state to determine competency. Olson faces alleged charges of terroristic threats, use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony, resisting arrest (1st offense), and criminal mischief ($0-$500). The motion was not objected to by Olson’s attorney and further proceedings will take place pending the results of the competency evaluation.
