MERNA–On Monday, March 21 ten members of the Anselmo-Merna (A-M) Quiz Bowl team competed against 32 teams for the ESU 10 quiz bowl competition in Kearney. Anselmo-Merna placed second and the team is headed to the state competition on April 27 in Hastings.

A-M Spanish teacher and Quiz Bowl Coach Anna Stineman said she is proud of the students for the way they competed and for never giving up.

“I am extremely proud of them and their ability to do quick recall, even sometimes when we were down they didn’t let that stop them and they just kept answering away until we would potentially win the round. I’m just super proud of them,” Ms. Stineman told KCNI/KBBN.

Ms. Stineman told KCNI/KBBN the competition on Monday consisted of 29 preliminary rounds and four rounds in the finals. She said Anselmo-Merna (a class D school) competed with all other classes within the ESU district and that it is a huge accomplishment to place second, behind Class A school Kearney.

The team will compete at a Quiz Bowl in Merna on Wednesday, March 23 and in Broken Bow on Wednesday, March 30. The students meet for practice during lunch at least once a week. (Join KCNI/KBBN mid-morning on Wednesday, March 30 for the broadcast/livestream of the Custer County Quiz Bowl!)

According to the ESU 10 website, the Academic Quiz Bowl is a double elimination tournament between teams of 6 members (and as many alternates as the school wishes). Each round consists of 12 questions.
