Nebraska students entering 7th or 8th grade this summer will have the opportunity to explore the outdoors and learn about natural resources through Adventure Camp about the Environment (ACE Camp), set for June 21 to 24 at Kamp Kaleo near Burwell.
Hosted by Nebraska’s Natural Resources Districts, including the Lower Loup Natural Resources District, the three night and four day camp combines hands-on experiences with traditional summer camp activities. Kids will learn about water quality, soils, forestry, and wildlife while also doing activities like fishing, hiking, archery, and campfire programs.
Lower Loup NRD Information and Education Coordinator Alan Bartels said the camp is designed to introduce students to natural resources in a fun and engaging way, especially for those who may not have much prior exposure.
“There is a segment of the population in Nebraska where kids don’t get a lot of exposure to natural resources, which can seem odd considering the ruralness of our state,” said Bartels.
He said many campers are experiencing activities like fishing or wading in a stream for the first time, while also building an understanding of why those resources matter.

“It’s another avenue for Nebraska kids to develop an appreciation for natural resources, which is important because those kids are going to grow up to be the policymakers and politicians deciding things about how to protect those resources in the future,” Bartels explained.
Participation is capped at 30 students each year, with campers coming from communities across Nebraska which creates opportunities to build friendships that continue beyond camp itself.
Those wanting to register or seeking more information can call 308-728-3221 or visit the Adventure Camp about the Environment ACE Camp Facebook page. Bartels also encouraged checking with local NRDs about the availability of scholarships.
