The deadline has passed for candidates to file to be on ballots for Primary Elections this coming spring. Poll locations across Custer County will be open on May 12th from 8 AM until 8 PM.

Custer County ticket
On the Custer County ticket, only the District 1 Board of Supervisors seat is contested. Incumbent Anne Gibbons (R) and Reece Jensen (R) are both listed.
No filings were submitted for Custer County Surveyor.
Current Deputy County Attorney Kayla Clark has filed for the County Attorney position. Current County Attorney Steve Bowers told KCNI/KBBN that his absence on the ballot should be seen as a ‘passing of the torch’. He described Clark as a colleague who is ‘more than ready’ to take on the responsibility the position calls for.
No other county positions or school board races will appear on primary ballots due to not being contested by enough candidates. They will, however, appear on general election ballots as ‘automatically nominated candidates’. (A list of these candidates can be found at the end of this story)
City tickets
On the Broken Bow city ticket, the race for mayor is contested between incumbent Rod Sonnichsen and former Broken Bow Police Officer Christopher Shelby.
When asked about his departure from the police department and into a mayoral race, Shelby told KCNI/KBBN the decision wasn’t easy.
“The city gave me the opportunity to live out a childhood dream of serving and protecting a community,” said Shelby, “and that is something I will always be grateful for.”
Shelby went on to say that after a surgical procedure, he had to consider the long-term physical demands of the job and how they could impact both recovery and overall health.
“While I stepped away from law enforcement, I have not stepped away from service. Running for mayor allows me to continue giving back to the community in a different way,” Shelby added.
Another contested race on the Broken Bow city ticket is that of the West Ward city council seat. There, incumbent Paul Holland will face Jeremiah Daugherty.
Multiple candidates are also listed as running to be on the Sargent city council including incumbent Kash Tobias, Tim Leibert, and Anthony Wagner.
Filed candidates as received by KCNI/KBBN as of the week of March 2nd
