CALLAWAY – The sky at Foster Smith Field outside of Callaway will be full of kites and the ground below will have plenty of activities and food available for the annual Callaway Kite Flight on Labor Day weekend.
Saturday and Sunday from 10 AM to 4 PM, adult visitors to the kite flight are $5, kids are $3, or pay for a whole car full of kite fans for $25. Once on the grounds, organizer Kindle Rice said the options for fun are numerous, all surrounding the kites.
“These kite flyers love to talk about their kites, so come out, and we encourage you to walk through the field. We don’t want little kites out there, there’s a designated area for small kites for the amateur kites. We cannot have those out in the kite field with the big kites they will ruin the big kites. But we encourage people to go walk out there and talk to the fliers. Just watch where you’re walking, watch for strings. But these guys love to talk about their kites and their craft so please go out and visit with them,” said Rice.
Activities on the ground beneath the kites for Saturday includes a mobile teddy bear mobile from 10 AM to 4 PM, Kona Ice Shaved Ice, and the Plant Stand From Callaway will have cotton candy.
Entertainment that can be found Saturday and Sunday includes a watermelon feed from the Callaway Market at 1 pm, Lifting Spirits face painting/glitter tattoos/and balloon art from 11 AM to 1 PM, barrel train rides from 11 AM to 1 PM, and more!
Saturday evening after the day’s flying, everyone is invited to Henry’s Callaway Bar for the annual American Legion Scholarship fund catfish fry. The free will donation event starts at 5 PM.
Later in the evening Saturday, the night flight at 10 PM will show that kites can be great even when it’s not sunny.
“The night flight is a spectacle you just have to see. It’s all these fantastic kites that are lit up and you can’t see anything but these lights dancing through the sky and it is just surreal. It’s so nice and calm out there, you just lose yourself in it,” smiled Rice.
On Sunday around the corner from the kite flying grounds, the Seven Valleys Rodeo Association will be hosting their No Excuse Bull Riding event. Gates open at 6 PM, with performances starting at 7 PM. A cowboy calcutta, mutton busting at intermission, and concessions are all included in this year’s event.
Those wishing to keep up with this weekend’s kite flight activities and updates are invited to follow the Callaway Kite Flight on Facebook. Head to Callaway this weekend for flying, food, and fun!
