City Electrical Crews Continue to Repair Grid

The Broken Bow City Council held a short regular meeting on Tuesday, May 13, in the Broken Bow Municipal Building.

Following the Consent Agenda, which included approving the April 22nd meeting minutes and approval of the bills as posted, the Council heard from Electrical Superintendent Blake Waldow. His report highlighted progress on repairs to the electrical grid incurred from the Power Plant Failure.

Waldow told the Council that with the most recent planned outage on May 3, the crews could move all city power off of the temporary mobile substation that NPPD provided in the wake of the February 20th explosion. Waldow said the goal was to discontinue using the substation sometime in June, but he was proud that they could send it back on May 8, saving the City $16,000.

Waldow said there are  22 residences and 50 businesses left for crews to finish the complete conversion of power in the City. They will communicate with those customers on any additional outages needed when they conduct phases three and four.  The Council thanked Blake and the electrical crews for their efforts to make the necessary repairs.

Under New Business, the Council approved the Broken Bow Police Department’s Mobile Data Computer Policy. Council Members also unanimously approved a $331,506.38 payment to Meyers Construction Inc. for work completed at the Eagle Crest Subdivision from November 6, 2024, to February 1, 2025, and approved a payment of $255,591.80 to Meyers for work completed from February 2, 2025, to May 1, 2025. The City is making the payments from the sales tax infrastructure fund.

During comments, City Administrator David Schmidt said he has been communicating with the Department of Transportation about the ongoing construction in Broken Bow on Highway 2. According to DOT, the construction is on schedule, and they plan to switch to work on the opposite lanes mid-next week.

Mayor Rod Sonnichsen thanked the City’s street department for completing repairs to the levees along Mud Creek that have needed repair for several years. The Mayor also thanked several other departments for their good work for the City.

The next meeting will be held at 6:00 pm on May 27.
