Grimes, Iowa – The Nebraska wrestling team had two individuals take second place in their respective weight classes at the Grand View Open on Saturday. Overall, 10 Huskers made the trip to Iowa with five grapplers recording top six finishes.
In the freshman/sophomore division, Quinton Chavez recorded two pins and a major decision in route to a sixth-place finish at 125. Logan Valledor joined Chavez in this weight class tallying a pin and two victories by decision but came up short of placing. At 133, Hayden Mills ran the consolation ladder, recording a pin, major decision and decision. Ismael Ayoub wrestled in the 141 division and recorded four victories to finish sixth. At 149, Reese Davis placed second as he tallied five-straight wins with his lone loss coming in the finals to Northern Iowa’s Ryder Downey. Nate Wemstrom wrapped up the freshman/sophomore division at 197. Wemstrom placed fourth and totaled four bonus-point victories to make it to the third-place match.
In the open division, Elise Brown Ton (174) placed second, tallying four-straight wins by decision. He defeated Abel Nava (Providence), Tyler Brandt (Life), Isaiah Luellen (Grand View) and Keegan Mulhill (Eastern Oregon) to qualify for the championship match.
To wrap up play for the Huskers, Blake Cushing, Joshua Licking and Nic Stoltenberg wrestled in their respective classes but fell in the consolation rounds.
Next up, the Huskers stay on the road for the Navy Classic on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 9 a.m. (CT).
